HE ARA TMATA CREATING For North District Council GREAT PLACES Supporting our people News updates about new speed limits on Council roads April 2021 Safer journeys 60 The Council is required to review all speed limits in the District under the Government's Road to Zero 2020- 2030 national road safety strategy. We are undertaking a road catchment-based rolling review of speed limits, focusing on roads where better speed management will reduce serious injuries and fatal crashes. Why are we doing this? Speed limits on many of our roads were set when limits were restricted to 50 km/h in urban areas, 100 km/h in most other places and 70 km/h on a few semi-urban roads. As a result, New speed limits came into force on more than 60 Council-administered roads between Kaeo and Ohaeawai on 25 January. The Mayor and Councillors set new speeds on roads in May 2020 after seeking community feedback on a Speed Limits Bylaw 2019. our speed limits do not always match the road environment. In some cases, we have 100 km/h speed limits on narrow, unsealed reads with one-lane bridges and poor visiblity on corners. Our district has also grown and traffic volumes + Speed limits fell from 100 km/h to 80 km/h on 16 roads or sections of road * Speed limits fell from 100 km/h to 60 km/h on 34 roads or sections of road have changed. There were 7,409 reported crashes in Northiand between 2014 and 2018. + Speed limits fell from 100 km/h to 40 km/h on 10 roads or sections of road Speed was a factor in 20% of these crashes and a factor in 30% of 733 death and serious + Speed limits rose from 50 km/h to 60 km/h on two roads injury crashes. We need to ensure we all get to our destinations safely. Improved speed managenent is one way of making our roads safer. Other ways of increasing safety. inciude better engineering safer cars and improving driver education. Government and Council are working on these other options as welI, but they take time and are costly. We need to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on our roads now.
